In today’s market, homes don’t always look like homes, and appraisers are increasingly asked to make sense of the unconventional. Barndos to Domes: Appraising Unconventional Homes is a three-hour continuing education course built for real estate appraisers facing the growing trend of atypical residential properties. As steel-framed barndominiums, dome homes, earthships, and live/work hybrids gain popularity, understanding how to classify and credibly value these structures is more critical than ever.

This course equips you with the tools to tackle appraisal challenges where traditional comparables fall short. You’ll explore form selection dilemmas, marketability risks, and lender hesitations, alongside strategies for meeting USPAP, ANSI®, and GSE requirements. Through real-world examples, you’ll learn how to clearly document your methodology, apply the cost approach when needed, and support your conclusions with confidence, even when the subject property defies the norm.

New Mexico State Requirement Details for Appraiser Continuing Education

Renewal Date: 24 months, 4/30 odd years

Hours Required: 28 Hours

7-Hour National USPAP Continuing Education Course or equivalent
7-hour Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course or 4-hour Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course (see explanation below)
additional approved continuing education hours (see explanation below)

Effective January 1, 2026, a Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course is required for Continuing Education. The first time a Licensee completes the Continuing Education requirement for this course, the course length must be 7 hours. If a Licensee successfully completed a 7-hour (plus 1-hour exam) course as part of their Qualifying Education, they have satisfied this requirement. Every 2 calendar years thereafter, the course length must be at least 4 hours. This new course requirement is included in the 28 total hours for a 2-year renewal.

Continuing education requirements for initial trainees, licenses and certificates issued for less than two full years are pro-rated as defined in 16.62.7.12 NMAC

Certificates: Immediately upon appraisal course completions, The CE Shop will provide students with an electronic copy of the course certificate of completion. Certificates will remain in your account for a minimum of five years, should you need additional copies at a later time. Please refer to your renewal application to determine if you need to submit your certificate(s) of completion with your renewal. Course completion dates are recorded using Central Standard Time. Please note that the date on your certificate of completion will reflect this.
